With so many new beauty products coming out on the market (especially as holiday shopping and bonus season approaches), it’s tempting to go on a big beauty splurge. But are all these new products influencers gush about on Tiktok and YouTube worth our hard-earned cash? Before you go plucking all those new beauty releases off the shelves, remember these insider tips to save money and make smarter beauty choices when you shop.

1. Know that not all beauty products are created equal

Some beauty products are better than others, and some are just a waste of money. The personal care industry is growing rapidly, and sadly, not all products have been diligently tested for safety. It’s up to us to be more cautious about what we put on our body.

2. Remind yourself that you don’t need every single beauty product out there

I know it’s tempting, but there’s absolutely no need to buy every single new beauty product on the market. Whether or not you have the means to do so, it’s just wasteful. Instead, stick to the basics and only buy products you know you really need. For example, if a new brand of makeup line came out that every influencer is using now but you’re a tinted moisturizer and cheek and lip tint kind of girl, there’s no reason for you to jump on the bandwagon and buy the entire collection when you know you won’t even be using all the products regularly.

3. Be wary of some products that may have harmful ingredients

Unfortunately, some beauty products contain ingredients that can do more harm than good to your body or the environment. Before buying a beauty product, always read the ingredients list and do some research on any questionable ingredients. Avoid products with potentially harmful chemicals. It’s always good practice to choose products with more natural ingredients. There are many natural, eco-friendly options available on the market; you just need to find the one that works best for you.

4. Realize that expensive doesn’t always mean better

Just because a product is expensive and endorsed by big celebrities and influencers doesn’t mean it’s going to be worth investing in. Don’t assume that something will work well for you just because you blew big bucks on it. Chances are, there are cheaper options that are just as good, if not better and more compatible with your skin.

5. Do your research ahead; trial and error can be expensive

Trying different beauty products can be fun (especially if you get them for free like most celebrities, influencers, and beauty bloggers and editors do), but it can also get expensive if you’re spending your own hard-earned money and none of them turn out to be the right products for you. Doing your research should include not just looking up product features on magazines, websites, vlogs, and social media, but also reading several honest reviews from people who have actually tried and used the product for some time before making your purchase. If you have a trusted dermatologist, it would be wise to seek her advice, too. When you visit shops, you should also speak to the brand’s cosmetic consultants who have been trained on the right use of the products and can give you personalized advice for your specific needs. If you can, try samples before buying the full size.

Being wiser about the beauty products you buy helps you save money and make better choices for your health and the environment. Remember that research and reviews should be your best friend when beauty shopping, and with so many experts and outspoken consumers out there, you’re sure to find all the information you need to make smarter beauty decisions.
