Our period can be both a blessing and a curse. Here’s how to make sure it doesn’t affect our skin negatively.

At 30+, I still get period breakouts. I hate it! As if getting period cramps is not yet bad enough, I also get pimples a few days or on the day of my period—which usually clears a few days after, but sometimes not without leaving dark pimple marks.

Enough knowledge about skin from years of writing beauty tells me this is hormones at work, but that doesn’t mean there’s no way around it. It also helps to have beauty experts as friends, like fellow blogger and former beauty editor Nicole Romero, who gave a talk on beauty & wellness at the recent Jeunesse Anion Sanitary Napkins and Liners Millennial Fair.

Nicole talked about how to take better care of our skin and battle the negative effects of our red days—and the resulting stress. I share below some of her tips, as well as new products I found that might help:

1. Protect your skin with antioxidant rich creams and food.

Try this Soothing Day Cream with SPF 15 (left) from Skin by John Robert Powers (P895, available on skinbyjohnrobertpowers.com) that softens and moisturizes skin—all without the greasy feel. Its fast-absorbing formula provides intense care and protection throughout the day. Formulated with Sodium Hyaluronate, Green Tea Extract, and Glycerin, it leaves skin enriched with skin-loving antioxidants and soothing natural ingredients. It soothes dry skin, prevents sunburn, and slows down premature aging. It’s also non-comedogenic and hypo-allergenic.

2. Get eight hours of quality sleep. To do this, make sure to shut down gadgets an hour before snoozing. It also helps to have a nighttime ritual, like enjoying some hot tea or a warm bath. Keep essential oils with relaxing scents by your bedside table.

3. To battle period breakouts, use products with tea tree oil or salicylic acid. If you can, it’s always best to consult a derma about your skin woes.

Using a cotton pad, pat on this Clarifying Toner (left) from Skin by John Robert Powers (P349, available on skinbyjohnrobertpowers.com) that’s formulated with Witch Hazel Water Extract, which helps keep your skin beautiful and unblemished. It deeply rids your skin of oil and dirt without leaving it dry, and instead leaves skin looking and feeling refreshed, energized, matte, and oil-free. It helps minimize and tighten pores, controls excess sebum production, and prevents acne.

4. Treat yourself to some pampering, like aromatherapy, getting a massage, meditation, and even shopping, so you can relax.

5. Makeup is here to help! Concealer is your best friend. It always helps to groom and shape your brows, curl your lashes, apply cheek tint, and a bright lipstick to perk up your complexion and face.

Swipe on these luxe lipsticks from Skin by John Robert Powers (P499 each, available on skinbyjohnrobertpowers.com) that come in six gorgeous shades, each formulated with Shea Butter and Jojoba Oil—lip-loving ingredients that soften, moisturize, and plump up your puckers. It also has sunscreen for immediate protection against the sun’s harmful UV rays.

6. Drink lots of water and eat a healthier diet—this includes reducing your sugar intake.

Aside from these, it also helps to always keep a pack of the new Jeunesse Anion singles pad in your beauty kit, so you’re ready in case of period emergency. Period woes and nightmares should be the least of your concerns, and Jeunesse Anion sanitary pads help lighten up red days. The conveniently packed singles ultra day pad with wings is sleek, slim, and perfect for light to medium flow. It’s chic and easy to slip in your clutch, pouch, tote, and travel bag.
