I have a confession to make: I only recently got on Snapchat (add me—trixiereyna). And, I’m still trying to get the hang of it. Another confession: I really don’t get it, but I know I have to—I have to at least try.

As a digital content creator who insists on keeping her content mostly photos and copy, it’s hard to accept that less and less people like to read. There was one point when people just wanted to click through photos and not read articles; apparently, now they’d rather just watch videos—clicking requires effort! And more and more, they want to view videos on the one screen they have with them at all times: their mobile devices.

So, I’m not surprised short-form videos are fast gaining popularity, as more mobile apps with this capability continue to rise. Apps like Snapchat obviously benefit from this growing habit—its subscriber base is now at 100 million globally! And until recently, I wasn’t even part of that. Are you?

In the Philippines, Snapchat has already gained a solid following among the young ones with its unconventional approach to sharing on social: from quick (10-second) videos to cool filters. Snapchat usage is expected to increase further, similar to how Filipinos have quickly adapted to other popular social media apps, so if you aren’t on it yet, I suggest you read on and learn the basics. After all, with smartphone penetration at 55% and a record of holding the highest number of time spent on social media at 3.7 hours, according to the latest WeAreSocial January 2016 report, more customers will more likely follow suit.

It starts with downloading the app. It might take a while to get used to the interface of swiping left, right, up, down, but you’ll get the hang of it eventually. Just avoid that circle at the bottom if you don’t want to snap yourself or your location accidentally. Key things to know:
